The institutions failing, the technology accelerating, the money corroding, the crowds responding, and the people who can and cannot see it: these are not separate stories. They are one story told from different angles, and the full picture only becomes legible when all the angles are held at once.

Central Thesis

The inflationary system that survives by leaking value, managed by institutions that survive by controlling information, is now colliding with a deflationary technology that cannot leak and a distributed ledger that cannot be controlled.

A historian called Joseph Tainter studied how civilisations collapse and found a consistent pattern. They do not usually fail because of invaders or natural disasters. They fail because complexity becomes its own reward. The institution exists to protect the institution. The problem it was created to solve becomes secondary.

We are seeing that now. Everywhere. At the same time.

That is not a metaphor for the current moment. It is a description of it.

The trust data confirms this analytically. Edelman and Gallup have tracked institutional confidence across Western democracies for decades. The trajectory is not ambiguous: governments, media, central banks, courts, global institutions — all below 50% trust in most measured populations, all on continuous downward trends since approximately 2008, none showing reversal.

This is not a political problem amenable to electoral solution.
